What are Surgical Gowns

A surgical gown is a personal protective garment intended to be worn by health care personnel during surgical procedures to protect both the patient and the health care personnel from the transfer of microorganisms, body fluids, and particulate matter. Based on the FDA, there are four levels of protective risk regarding medical gowns. Among them surgical gowns are considered as class II medical devices which require a 510(k) premarket notification.

Due to the controlled nature of surgical procedures, two critical zones of protection have been defined that include the front of the body from the shoulders to knees and the arms from the wrist cuff to above the elbow. The entire front of the medical gown is required to have a barrier performance of at least level 1. The back of the surgical gown, however, may be non protective.
